If A is a C*-algebra, then there are a number of useful
"enveloping" structures, or larger C*-algebras, that contain
A as a C*-subalgebra. Among these are the enveloping von
Neumann algebra A**, the multiplier algebra M(A), the
local multiplier algebra Mloc (A), the
-monotone and regular monotone
completions, and the injective envelope I(A). In joint work
with D. Farenick, we examine such structures, and we characterize them
in some particular cases.
