A space time is called stably causal if it has a global time function. I will discuss a method to construct stably causal Lorentzian metrics on any noncompact manifold (of dimension at least 2). Furthermore I will discuss an existence result for metrics with a time function and negative sectional curvature on timelike planes. This result uses Gromov's theory of partial differential relations.
