We introduce a weakened version of the decomposition rank orginally defined by Kirchberg and Winter on nuclear C*-algebras. It shares many properties with the decomposition rank and coincides with it for commutative algebras giving the topological dimension of the their spectra. It is also related to the asymptotic dimension of discrete spaces. Contrary to the decomposition rank it attains finite values on many infinite algebras and may serve as a dimension theory in that case.
This is joint work with Wilhelm Winter.
