There are several candidates for the adjoint of an operator between von Neumann algebras with fixed states or weights. In this talk I shall compare two and celebrate the merits of one. The work is motivated by the problem of inducing maps between the underlying standard Hilbert spaces of the algebras, and in turn extrapolating from such maps to operators between the algebras. The results are currently being used in the construction and analysis of noncommutative Markov semigroups.
