Alexei was a truly kind man, a warm hearted man. Always friendly, always cheerful, often funny. A wise man. A good man who did a lot of good to people.
He was devoted to his family and cared for his family.
And he was devoted to what he did, Mathematics and Science. That means in the first place he cared for people doing science, students, his colleagues, and the community.
He was a legend among the students here Cork and in each and every place he worked, in Voronezh in Russia, Moscow, Australia, and Ireland.
A professor most beloved by students and most esteemed by colleagues.
I was lucky to know him when I was an undergraduate student, his student, and then to be close to him for the last few years in Cork, most enjoyable, dear and exciting scientifically for me.
Working with Alexei both now and then was like being in Wonderland. Full of miracles and interesting intriguing things and unexpected facts. A Wonderland where it is so easy to make discoveries. These Wonderlands were created by Alexei for us, for his students, collaborators and colleagues. I have seen him making this miracle again and again, wondering how he does it, how he makes research and teaching a most enjoyable quest.
He had this extraordinary and rare mind, extraordinary imagination, which let him see the thing from a different perspective. He was a pioneer and a creator. Whichever area he went to he initiated a fascinating work and brought his students and collaborators with him. He was always exploring, always open to new knowledge, eager to learn, he had this fresh interest in the world around us in all its variety and diversity whether that were aspects of life, physics, society, biology, economics, and, of course, mathematics. And it was an exploring and creative interest, as from this information stream he created models amenable to scientific approach. He was so rich of ideas, so generous in sharing them with his students and colleagues, so proud whenever they made a success, especially proud for success of younger colleagues whom he taught, inspired and encouraged to think and to explore. I have heard many times people saying Alexei knows everything – and that was about right. Whenever you were stuck with any problem or question – and that could come from any background really – a good idea would have been to go chat with Alexei. Whenever a student had an idea, a problem – he went to Alexei.
Wherever he worked he was a centre of scientific life, an attractor of excellent researchers, a generator of novel ideas and a leading mind. Alexei's scientific accomplishment is huge. With renowned results in an extraordinary range of Mathematical disciplines, Applied Mathematics and Science. The community of his students, his scientific school, is huge, as is the scientific network he built.
We will be missing him a lot. The joy of working with him and talking to him and listening to him. His kindness. His advice. His wisdom.
And we will remember him a lot. Memories of him will be with us. His scientific legacy will be with us and will be affecting and influencing us for many years to come. The ideas we picked from him will be with us, as well as the things we learned from him, the ways of doing science and caring for people we learned from him will be with us.
Dear Friends,
It is a sad day, Alexei Pokrovskii is no more with us.
I will not talk about the biography of Alexei, a brilliant and original researcher, a great scientist who transcended disciplinary borders, an intelligent and open-minded person.
I will just say a few personal words about him. Seeing how many friends of Alexei are here today, and were here yesterday, and thinking that he came to Ireland just about 10 years ago, I am really impressed. But this is not all, there are many other friends who were with Alexei when he was younger, and who are now in Russia , US, France and other countries. Many of them asked me to represent them here and to say how they loved Alexei. Natasha, Olya, Aliosha, you have many friends on this planet!
I came to Alexei's laboratory 27 years ago, and I learned many things from him, in research and in life, but one surprised and influenced me probably more than others. Alexei, himself a strongest researcher, admired everybody, and it is not so common in the competitive research community. He looked at everybody he met with a huge interest and discovered in everyone a special talent or a special merit (it could be about proving theorems, reading research literature, playing chess, speaking to authorities or telling funny stories). I am trying to do like he did, but it is really not easy. Dear friends, let us all try to admire each other like Alexei did.
