Mathematics Enrichment Classes in 2011/2012 Schedule

The Irish Mathematical Olympiad 2012 – May 12th, Western Gateway Building room 106, 10:00-13:00 (paper 1) and 14:00-17:00 (paper 2).

General Information:

Classes are held in

Lecture Theatre 107, Western Gateway Building, Saturday, at 10:00-13:00 a.m. Please click here for a map.

Each Saturday classes will start at 10:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m., with a short break midway through. They will be held every Saturday in 2011 until December 17th.  Classes will then resume on January 15th, 2012 and continue until May.

The 2012 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) will be held in Argentina during the month of July. The Irish team of six will be selected on the basis of the performance of students at the Final Round of the Irish Mathematical Olympiad which will be held at the end of April/beginning of May 2012. While there is no guarantee that any of the local UCC Programme participants will qualify for IMO, all of them will be exposed to a variety of mathematical concepts and learn new skills that should serve them well in their studies in future.

The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is a mathematical problem solving contest for female second level students. The first EGMO will take place in Cambridge, England, in April 2012. The selection of the Irish team for the EGMO will be done in two stages:  During the period February 13-February 25, the students can hand or mail in solutions for a set of problems to be distributed around Feb. 13.  On Feb 25, a test will be organized in each of the regional Maths Enrich centres. Please see the schedule above.

New: In addition to the Mathematics Enrichment Classes, since October 1st we have started

Problem solving sessions:  Saturdays, 10:00-12:30, Western Gateway Building, room 106. Most of the participants have attended the UCC Maths Enrichment Classes in the previous year, but all students are welcome. They can come to prepare for IrMO, IMO or EGMO, or just for the fun of it. The main condition for attending these sessions is willingness to do the homework! MC900433817[1]

Mathematics Enrichment Classes at University College Cork

Since 1987, members of the Mathematics Department at UCC have offered Mathematics Enrichment Classes to high-achieving senior Second Level students. These classes meet for three hours on Saturday mornings and up to 100 students attend them. Students are invited to attend the classes based on their performance at the Junior Certificate Mathematics Examination and teacher recommendations. Invitations to attend these classes are highly valued.

Programmes involving Mathematics Enrichment Classes are to be found in many countries. They are generally very extensive, meet more regularly and involve a large proportion of students. Generous sponsorship is readily available for such programmes as many of the leading scientists and engineers in these countries would have some of their early training at these activities.

  Our contest

Our problem-solving contest will run every other week, and is organized in three categories. To participate in a category, you need to reside in Ireland and to be at or below the educational level designated by the category title.
To enter our contest, send your proof, together with your name, school and class level to

UCC Mathematics Enrichment Programme,
School of Mathematical Sciences,
UCC, Cork

Alternatively, you can send your solution as a file attachment to mathsenrichment@ucc.ie

The questions for the first edition of our contest  are listed below.

  Pre-Junior Certificate students

Post-Junior Certificate students

            Teachers

Given a  triangle ABC and a point M in its Lesson plane, show that the areas of the triangles AMB and AMC are equal if and only if the point M lies on the line joining A with the midpoint K of the side BC.

Find the dimensions of the largest rectangle inscribed in a semi-circle of radius r, such that two neighbouring vertices are on the diameter of the semi-circle.

Let E be an ellipse tangent to two lines AB and AC at the points B and C, and let F and G denote the two focal points of the ellipse. Show that the angles BAF and CAG are equal.

We hope that the secondary school teachers will enjoy having a contest of their own (see above). In additions, all teachers are warmly encouraged to contribute problems to our site for publication in the Math notes section.

Maths Circles also have their own new webpage.
