In many scientific and general encyclopedias the meaning of the word is illustrated by the picture like that in Figure 1.

The quantities $x$, $y$, measured along the horizontal and the vertical axis respectively, can have different physical meanings, such as deformations versus stress (plastic hysteresis) or external magnetic field versus magnetization (ferromagnetic hysteresis).
